The once hard cocoon is softened through boiling water and releases a single silk filament. By winding the silk strand and shaping the direction of its path, multiple design options in shoe design were explored. The silk thread remains in place due to its natural glue that will harden after it gets in contact with air. The name “Léi Zǔ” refers to the Chinese legendary empress, who invented the silk reel.

“Escape of a moth” - 100% hand spun silk handwoven textile
There is no use for a defect cocoon in the production of high quality silk reeling. In this textile a hatched cocoon is still worth its silk - even more, because the moth could reproduce and lay eggs - it represents the full circle of life.
All steps are handmade; starting with the preparation of the cocoon to harvest the silk, to spinning the yarn and finally weaving on a loom. 1000 hatched cocoons were used to create this textile.
The beads in the fabric are markers to display the individual length of each cocoon. Therefore, the final outcome is not predictable – a true natural design.
One cocoon – one bead – one moth.

“Death of a moth” - 100% reeled silk textile
Looking at sericulture and the actual brutal path a moth is going through, the concept is demonstrating how many cocoons are actually needed to create a textile. In this fabric the weft yarn is worth of 50 cocoons. Each square finally represents the 50 moths that were boiled alive and died for a small piece of silk fabric. This design ought to create awareness to sericulture and its cruel sides.
